I’ve just been hearing on the news about the awful damage caused by a surgeon to lots of women with breast health problems, it’s just horrible what these women have/are suffering and it seems the motive is unknown as to why the surgeon did these operations.

I wondered if anyone here has sued their doctor/surgeon? I know we can’t mention any names of course but it does occur to me at times that the doctors who left me in more pain than I started with should be accountable and by not saying anything other people might end up with the same problems.

From my experience as a member of S.I.N many years ago, one would need to be in a group of several people with the same outcome re surgeon to achieve a case against that surgeon . For One person alone it would be nigh impossible because 99% if not all, stick together. I’ attended meetings of this nature many years ago with the S.I.N group which as far as I know is no longer. But AVMA may be.

Thanks Rose for the response. I’ve looked up the groups you’ve mentioned and I might ask on our local social media if anyone has had any problems. I know at least one other person whose had problems after surgery with the same doctors. I might ring up AVMA anyway to sound them out.

Hi Laura, when I was a member of AVMA many years ago, I had a list & some contact info. with people who had issues with procedures sent to my address. I suppose it will have changed now but still worth looking into. I did go to one or two of their meetings one held in Birmingham and somewhere else. (it’s at least 15 years ago so memory escapes me) but I’m thinking it may have been Nottingham
It was AVMA who suggested which specialised consultant to see next. And I went out of my county for this

It’s a tricky one.. I feel in my heart I want my surgeons to take responsibility for their failings but my head says by doing nothing I won’t have to go through a lot of difficulties and face them with it.

As you said Rose, just one person against the medical profession doesn’t stand much of a chance. If the surgeons had said sorry then I’d be better able to accept the problems I’ve got but they just discharged me and left me to get on with it.

Some more thinking/reviewing stuff is required I feel!

Some years ago I did lodge a formal complaint against a pain consultant who gave me injections without even telling me, let alone asking permission or explaining what he was doing. Then, despite the hospital policy being that patients shoudl be kept there for at least half an hour in case of serious side effects,(I told them how i felt) I was sent straight out to drive home on busy motorways at rush hour. I had such a terrible reaction and was so ill, I ended up 50 miles from home in the wrong direction. I was lying on an exam table facing away from him when suddenly he stuck a needle into my hip, rapidly followed by one in my shoulder. He had a tray of needles ready on the window sill as if this was standard practice. I wanted to sue for assault but the complaint to the hospital took so long; almost 3 years, that I was out of time then to be able to sue. I tried using PALS and I forget the name, but an organisation that was supposed to do all the paperwork for you. They were utterly useless, used false information, masses of spelling and grammar mistakes, i ended up doing it myself. It ended with the hospital admitting responsibility, apologising and changing their practices so it could never happen again. They required everyone to sign an agreement before any injections were done and the consultant got his hand slapped. It didn’t get me anywhere but I was determined it wouldn’t happen to anyone else.
